Transportation Trail + Turntable Ride
North Carolina Transportation Museum Foundation, Spencer, NC
Your print-at-home or mobile ticket is for admission to the Transportation Trail, an outdoor walking tour of the N.C. Transportation Museum, plus a ride on our 1924 turntable at the Bob Julian Roundhouse.
Self-guided walking tours will take you through outdoor spaces of the museum to view our collection of transportation exhibits. A variety of exhibit items have been moved outdoors for viewing while the interiors of the buildings are closed to the public. This is an opportunity to see some of the museum's collection outdoors that is normally kept indoors.
Your ticket will allow you the unique experience of taking a couple spins on the turntable at the Bob Julian Roundhouse, built in 1924 and dedicated as a Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark in 2011. The turntable was used to turn and position steam locomotives and later diesels as they were being serviced at Spencer. Rides are offered Tuesday through Saturday at 10:30 AM, 12:00, 1:00, and 2:00 PM. Rides are offered Sunday at 1:30 and 3:00 PM. Rides last approximately five minutes.
In accordance with CDC and other health guidelines, tours will follow a designated pathway. Buildings will be closed, but exhibits will be viewable along the pathway. Train rides are not available at this time due to social distancing requirements.
The tour is walking intensive. Visitors with mobility issues are encouraged to bring their own wheelchairs, walkers, etc., as required. Please note that the turntable is not ADA accessible due to its design.
Please enter via the main entrance at 1 SAMUEL SPENCER DRIVE, SPENCER, NC, and follow the signs to the drive-up ticket booth. Remain in your vehicle at check-in and present your print-at-home ticket or mobile ticket. You will be directed to parking and the start of the walking tour route.
Museum hours are Tuesday-Saturday 9AM-5PM, Sunday 12PM-5PM.
Thank you for purchasing your ticket, which supports the ongoing operation of the N.C. Transportation Museum!
