    CTHULHU: THE MUSICAL!
    Friday, July 5th, 2024

    at KINGS RALEIGH
    $20 adv / $25 day-of

    Shady’s back, ya’ll!

We’re taking our original show, Cthulhu: the Musical!, on the road on our “Road to R'Lyeh” 2024 summer tour.  For the uninitiated, here’s our deal: PFF is Oregon’s only dedicated puppet musical horror troupe. We perform original scripts with original music. Far from the lo-fi puppet show stereotype, our productions feature elaborate custom-built hand-and-rod (Muppet-style) puppets, a full-rock band, multimedia scenic art projections, and a full cast of performers––each a Swiss army knife of talent unto themselves, slaying as actors, puppeteers, singers, improv comics, and world class Twister athletes (srsly, it gets crazy behind the puppet house).

The play is adapted from the 1929 short story, The Call of Cthulhu,” by horror icon, H.P. Lovecraft, and tells the story of his most famous creation: Cthulhu, a giant, malevolent, octopus-faced elder god who hibernates beneath the ocean, communicating to humans through their dreams, slowly driving them mad. While Lovecraft is not as much of a household name as writers like Stephen King or Edgar Allen Poe, he is widely considered to be the creator of the genre of gothic horror, and the creatures and themes he created are highly influential on modern literature of all genres. The story we chose to adapt is dark, disturbing, and totally unfit for musical comedy—all qualities that make it a perfect fit for our style.

    PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

It's the moment we've all been waiting for... Raleigh's infamous LONNIE WALKER returns!  They're putting out their new record Easy Easy Easy Easy (out July 7th on Sleepy Cat Recs) and we are throwing down with the likes of Carrboro's gaze-ful VERITY DEN and local indie supergroup: QWILT.  This is going to be one that the indie heads will not want to miss.

    LONNIE WALKER
    Website | Bandcamp | Spotify | Instagram
Brian Corum formed North Carolina indie rock band Lonnie Walker while he was still a student at East Carolina University. After filling out the rest of the lineup with guitarist Eric Hill, drummer Raymond Finn, keyboardist Justin Flythe, and bassist Josh Bridgers, the band released its debut These Times Old Times

Lonnie Walker toured steadily throughout the South, with bassist Mike Robinson joining prior to the release of follow-up Earth Canals. That year, however, Corum — the group’s primary songwriter, in addition to its vocalist and rhythm guitarist — was swept up in the opioid epidemic, and eventually ended up at a homeless shelter in Raleigh.

As Corum slowly rebuilt his life and considered his future as a musician, he began writing new songs — with “one of the only guitars I didn’t sell,” he notes — and eventually, the band returned in 2017. “I really can’t help it. I enjoy it,” Corum says of playing in Lonnie Walker, before adding: “I really can’t help it.”

Easy, Easy, Easy, Easy was recorded with Colin Swanson-White at Synaesthetics Studios in Raleigh in late 2019, and sees the band further develop its unique stamp on the Carolina music scene, driven by raucous sound and Corum’s intensely personal songwriting.

    VERITY DEN
    Bandcamp | Instagram
Verity Den was born of chance meetings and life-long dedications. The band is comprised of Casey Proctor, Trevor Reece and Mike Wallace, all of whom spent considerable time in their respective and shared DIY-music communities before converging to form the group in early 2023. Casey and Trevor initially met as members of an ad-hoc improv ensemble performing tape loops, strings, and electronics as part of a multi-disciplinary series hosted on a rooftop in Chapel Hill called Attic 506. Soon after, the three shifted from long-running musical projects to focus on exploring new sonic territories together. The band operates in an ever-evolving dynamic of group improvisation and studio experimentation, capturing moments of coarse circuit completion and bringing to fruition long-gestating ideas and songs. The sound is raw and largely unadorned, transmitting both truth and wildness.

    QWILT
    Spotify | Instagram
Qwilt, formerly and briefly known as Wilt, is a supergroup based out of Raleigh, North Carolina. A collaboration between Emma Stees (lead vocals, guitar), Jonathan Crews (guitar, noise), Max Gowan (bass, engineering), and Adrian Teegarden (drums, vocals), the project weaves together dreamy, haunting melodies with powerful, distorted noise. The band is a unique combination of shoegaze and post-rock fueled by unleaded gasoline, junk food, and the power of friendship. Sometimes nauseating, sometimes sickly sweet, Qwilt is a midnight Sonic blast, a bologna sandwich at the speedway, a Cheerwine on an inner tube.

    Fiona Moonchild
    Bandcamp | InstagramYouTube

Born out of finding yourself in the the cosmic confusion of living out on the road, Sweets of Reason (2021) is a lush 12-song collection of infectious melodies set to the dreamy synths. PNW born Fiona Moonchild has been touring and playing shows relentlessly in collaborative projects such as Scott Yoder, Boyfriends and Doglob, but has only recently come out on her own to profuse her first darkly glamorous debut solo record.

Influences from Stereolab and Bowie are clearly part of the sonic genealogy of the dozen romantically saturated tracks that all started coming together on breaks from touring as a bedroom pop project. Bit by bit, her songwriting quickly expanded upon her receiving the Crybaby Studies Musician Grant, where she was able to do most of the instrumental tracking. Vocals were tracked at the DIY legendary Woodland Theater, and her Italy based touring pal Giacomo Papini was recruited on drums as the only outside instrumentalist. It was mixed, engineered, and produced herself-mostly on land, but some at sea, during her epic stint sailing from Seattle to Southern California.

As the world emerges from the wreckage of Covid-19, Moonchild keeps a cautious dream of hope, singing, “you’re the Pilar that keeps this city erect/do you know you are a beautiful dreamer.”

Before Salvo, there was a band called Pain, who released four albums and toured the U.S.A. heavily in the '90's. They produced a couple of videos, recorded a catchy tune for Cartoon Network, and had their songs included in the soundtracks of television shows. Then, they took a gigantic break.

Now, Pain frontman Dan Lord and guitarist Adam Guthrie, have assembled veteran band mates and brilliant new talent to create Salvo, and their new music is sure to please.

Salvo’s music has the kind of melodic style, catchy beats, dynamic instrumentation, and evocative lyrics that Pain always delivered, but with a new maturity and mastery that will leave listeners delighted.

    The Unsustainables

An eight-piece traditional ska and rocksteady band with a strong sound and breakout presence in North Carolina. Since publishing our debut EP in summer 2022, we have received positive feedback from audiences and critics alike, noted for the "authenticity" of our sound and energy of our performances. Indeed, audiences have lauded our tight harmonies, powerful melodies, and stage presence.

    Plastic Flamingoes

Plastic Flamingos is a Raleigh, NC based, four piece, pop punk band that incorporates a heavy dose of ska influences. They are a beacon of light in a dark world, playing silly songs about serious subjects, having an unhealthy obsession with summer, late 90’s/early 00’s punk compilations, and eating regional fast food. Over the past 4 years the band has built up their profile opening for national touring acts like Catbite, Keep Flying and Rozwell Kid; as well as touring and becoming regulars at The Fest in Gainesville, FL. They are currently working on a follow up to their Get stoked EP, released on Say-10 Records, and are looking forward to bringing these new songs to the stage.

    PNLTYBX

Pnltybx (pronounced penalty box) is a pop punk band with dreams of visual kei. Balancing catchy melodies and fun banter with the serious lyrical content you’d expect from a band with influences like the Wonder Years and the Hold Steady. Will (guitar/vocals) and Jake (bass/vocals) are a perfect songwriting duo with Gordie “Prince of Persia” Howe, the human metronome holding everything together on drums. The boys all suffer from various mental illnesses and have made it their mission to open more dialogue on mental health, depression, and substance abuse. Pnltybx is here to let everyone know that it’s okay to not be okay. You’re not alone.
