WEBSITE | FACEBOOK | LISTENAfter graduating from Northern Illinois University, keyboardist and composer Brian Simpson relocated to Los Angeles where he was soon playing alongside musicians Gerald Albright and Norman Brown and eventually on a world tour with Janet Jackson.
In 1990 Simpson received a call from George Duke that led to a decade of touring and production work with the late jazz legend. It was his tenure with George that led to working with a variety of artists, from James Ingram and Anita Baker to Dave Koz and Wayman Tisdale.
The popularity of his music world wide has kept Mr. Simpson on a seemingly endless world tour which in 2019 included Japan, Australia, Korea, Indonesia, Philippines, Spain, United Kingdom, Portugal, and South Africa.
With writing and performing credits on R&B chart-topping albums and Smooth Jazz Airplay charts, it’s clear why Brian is the veteran Music Director of so many jazz events.

*This is a general admission event. There is plenty of seating available. But it is first come, first serve and is therefore not guaranteed.About Phillip Michael Scales:
WEBSITE | FACEBOOK | INSTAGRAM | LISTEN
Growing up, Phillip-Michael Scales didn't understand what it meant that his aunt's close friend, the guitar player who called him "Nephew" and he called "Uncle B," was B.B. King. Once Phillip-Michael began guitar less, the significance became so clear that he shied away from soloing and most things blues. Instead, he fell in love with songwriting when an English teacher told him "A great writer can make their reader identify with anyone." The trouble was he couldn't find his story in the blues.
With a fierce independent streak and a passion for performing, Scales fronted his own indie bands, wrote and recorded his own music, and worked to make a name for himself on his own terms. All the while, his "Uncle B" just smiled a knowing smile and encouraged him to "stay with it." Their relationship grew closer as Scales began to discover "the blues" in his personal and professional life.
When his Uncle B passed away, Scales began incorporating more of the blues into his music as a way to honor him. "These days I'm finding more of my story in the blues. A lot has led me here between politics, my identity, and the idea of Legacy." The result is a sound he calls "Dive Bar Soul" which takes a bit of indie rock storytelling and couples it with the passion of the blues.
His single "Find a Way" attracted national radio attention in 2022 and garnered an invite to perform on the Ellen Degeneres Show. His music has taken him all the way to the Middle East, as well as festivals across Europe and North America. He has opened for Milky Chance, Jerry Cantrell (Alice In Chains), Caravan Palace, Fantastic Negrito, The New Respects, Anderson East, Guster, The Record Company, and Cory Brannan.

About theCAUSE:
WEBSITE | FACEBOOK | INSTAGRAM | LISTENtheCAUSE is a band consisting of 5 Pittsburgh musicians who have all been around the proverbial block. Playing tunes from Grateful Dead, Phish, The Beatles, Bob Dylan and MORE, including some very tasty originals, theCAUSE packs a punch while still paying close attention to the delicate touch. The players are Eric "Pappy" Weingrad on guitar and vocals (Double Dose, Reuben's Painted Mandolin, The Ditch), David Tauberg on bass and vocals (Powers Run Band, Hard to Handle, Cherylann Hawk), Mike South on drums (Left for Dead, Sticky, West Park Road) and, joining us in 2008, Pittsburgh blues veteran Jill Paone Simmons brings a whole new dimension to theCAUSE on vocals and continues to rock with us today. Jill also fronts the all-female Dead band Brown Eyed Women . Michael Cerveris is our permanent part time member playing keyboards (when he doesn't have commitments with his other great band the Sun Champs)
theCAUSE also has had the pleasure in 2012 and 2014 of having guitarist Steve Kimock join us on stage and in 2013, 2015 ,2016 ,2017, 2018,2019, 2022. 2023 and
2024 Jeff Mattson of Dark Star Orchestra spent an evening jamming with theCAUSE! Lisa Ann Mackey from Dark Star Orchestra sang with us in 2017 ,2018, 2019, 2022, 2023 and 2024We are beginning the practice of performing an annual show where we pick a Grateful Dead concert from 1965-1995 and attempt to recreate the entire setlist. This has, of course been done by countless Grateful Dead cover bands, and we figured once a year would be just fine for us. These shows will be announced about a week or two before the performance and, in true fashion, the show's original date will not be announced until we finish playing it (or someone guesses correctly while we're playing!)
Also, you will see theCAUSE appear as REUBEN'S PAINTED MANDOLIN once or twice a year. When we announce a show under this monicker, prepare yourself for a full evening of material from the JERRY GARCIA BAND repertoire. It's always a great time.

Buzz Poets have been one of Pittsburgh’s most colorful, maniacal and solid bands since 1997 when the flashy and trashy band of rockers first hit the Pittsburgh music scene. Their high energy, alt rock style got people’s attention not only for the stage antics and lyrical content, but for having very well written and memorable songs. The music is all over the map stylistically demonstrating the bands love for everything from the pop punk and ska sounds of 311 and Sublime to Seattle grunge rock, to hip hop and reggae, and of course their love for the Beatles as a songwriting foundation is apparent. Having written some classic radio hits like “Copenhagen Girl” “Psycho”, and “Parasite” the band played 200+ shows a year for many years, but the most meaningful song the band has ever written is “Angel Eyes” about the tragic loss of a dear friend. These days the band makes rare reunion appearances and consists of Tipper (Vocals, Guitar) Phil MacDowell (vocals, guitar) Tim Gaber (bass, vocals), Justin Sarra (keys, turntables), Ronnie Lavella (drums) and Juan Vasquez (guitar, vocals) The guys continue to bring the energy and the music that the loyal fans have known and loved for over a decade.

Ukraine’s Kommuna Lux performs "Odessa Gangsta Folk:" thrilling Klezmer music and rowdy speakeasy tunes from their hometown, powered by rocket fuel. Just as the streets of Odessa are rich with nostalgia and a bohemian Black Sea coastal vibe, Kommuna Lux’s
melodies are filled with dazzling rhythms, refreshing anarchy, and plenty of joie de vivre! The seven musicians founded the group around 2014. Surprised Odessites discovered flash mobs of the “gangsters” making music all around town: the Privoz market, the old #5 wooden tram line, the Primorsky Boulevard promenade, and rusty rocking boats at Lustdorf Beach. This pioneering time was followed by major concerts on renowned stages of the city, the country, and then worldwide. Since the beginning of the Russian aggression in Ukraine, Kommuna Lux has collected donations at all their concerts to support humanitarian causes. They honor their hometown and Ukraine’s heroes with a brilliant sound and spectacular concert!

About Jeremy Pinnell:
WEBSITE | FACEBOOK | INSTAGRAM | LISTEN
When Jeremy Pinnell released OH/KY in the summer of 2015 to stunned acclaim, it felt like an entire career compressed into one knock-out album. Hailed as, a “Mind-blowingly good” (Greg Vandy/KEXP) “ ”tutorial on classic country music” (Popmatters), Pinnell’s debut immediately differentiated as authentic and unflinching. Dogged touring through Europe and the States and celebrated radio sessions followed, cementing Pinnell’s position as a no-fuss master of his craft.
His 2017 album, Ties of Blood and Affection presented a canny lateral move. Instead of doubling down on the stark themes and values of his debut, the sophomore album found Pinnell finding comfort in his own skin, achieving the redemption only hinted at in his previous batch of haunted songs.
If the third time’s a charm, Pinnell is all shine and sparkle on Goodbye LA. Produced by Texan Jonathan Tyler, the tunes buff the wax and polish the chrome on Country music’s deeper roots. Rooted in his steady acoustic guitar, Pinnell’s songs are shot through with honest and classic elements. The rhythm section, all snap and shuffle, finds purpose in well-worn paths. The pedal steel and Telecaster stingers arrive perfectly on cue, winking at JP’s world-wise couplets . Here slippery organ insinuates gospel into the conversation. You can feel the room breathe and get a sense of these musicians eyeballing each other as their performances are committed to tape. And through it all comes this oaken identity, the devastating centerpiece of his work. Honest and careworn, Jeremy’s voice can touch on wry, jubilant, and debauched - all in a single line. At his best, Jeremy Pinnell chronicles the joy and sorrow of being human, which is the best that anyone could do.

Born and raised in the suburbs of Rochester, NY, Taylor Kelly is now a fixture in the vibrant Philadelphia music scene further honing her introspective take on jazz, soul, and funk. She combines her smooth, powerful, technically-informed voice with a full horn section, addictive hip hop and electronic beats, and complex arrangements she writes herself. Her sound is a dynamic blend of several established genres: she melds the improvisational looseness of jazz, the rhythmic earworms of funk, and the moving resonance of soul to carve out a niche all her own. Kelly names Stevie Wonder, Roy Hargrove, Erykah Badu, Chet Baker and Emily King as influences, integrating strong melodic contour and intricate harmonies into lyrically personal and sonically anthemic tracks.
‘All I Need’, Kelly’s EP released in February 2022, is an intimate and minimalistic departure from her previous work, which typically features an 8-piece band. Kelly recorded this project alone with her producer, Robby Webb, at his home studio before adding the colors, textures and prowess of Danae Greenfield (keys), Simon Martinez (guitar), Matt Keppler (bass), Conner Saltzer (drums), Frankie DeRosa (strings) and Zeek Burse (additional vocals). She credits Webb with helping her navigate the evolution of her sound. Kelly’s voice is the most prominent instrument in this latest project, providing both the melodic focal point as well as lush, layered harmonies. The result is a deeply groovy, moving and at times melancholic meditation on Kelly’s conflicted and searching inner world. The first single, “Maybe”, was featured in Chicago’s Vocalo Radio’s “In Rotation” playlist for November 2021 where she was also interviewed. See interview here.
Kelly is a Berklee College of Music graduate with a Bachelor’s Degree in Professional Music. Along with her band, she has released six albums/EPs, has shared the stage with Dirty Loops, St Paul and the Broken Bones, Moonchild, Becca Stevens, Monophonics, Neal Francis, Giacomo Turra and Georgia Anne Muldrow and has played at Beardfest and Rose Arts Festival. She has amassed over 750,000 listens for her single “California” on streaming services worldwide and has uplifted, inspired, and energized thousands of ardent concertgoers at hundreds of live shows with her unabashed authenticity and immersively freeing performance style. She released a live album entitled ‘Live in Philly’ with three accompanying videos on June 16th of 2023. Kelly has an unyielding, marrow-deep commitment to self expression through music and will continue to transfer this passion to her listeners with her new EP set to release later this year.
